Electrotherapies
Electrotherapies are treatment modalities that use electrical energy, light, sound waves, or electromagnetic fields to support healing and recovery. These therapies are often used alongside hands-on treatments and exercise programmes to help reduce pain, decrease inflammation, promote tissue repair, and improve overall function. The type of electrotherapy used will depend on your pet's individual condition and treatment goals.
One of the most commonly used electrotherapies in veterinary physiotherapy is therapeutic laser therapy. Laser treatment delivers light energy to the tissues, helping to stimulate cellular activity and increase blood flow to the affected area. This can help reduce pain and inflammation while encouraging faster healing of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and surgical wounds. Most pets find laser therapy comfortable and relaxing, with treatment sessions being quick and non-invasive.
Other electrotherapy options may include pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). PEMF therapy uses electromagnetic pulses to support healing and reduce discomfort, while NMES uses gentle electrical impulses to stimulate muscle contractions. This can be particularly beneficial for pets recovering from surgery or injury where muscle strength and function need to be rebuilt. Electrotherapies are always used as part of a tailored treatment plan and are selected based on your pet's specific needs to help achieve the best possible outcome.
