What is Veterinary Physiotherapy?

Veterinary physiotherapy is a treatment approach used to support the mobility, comfort, and overall wellbeing of any animal. It combines hands-on techniques, therapeutic exercises, rehabilitation plans and other evidence based treatments to help manage pain, improve movement, aid recovery after injury or surgery, and maintain performance in sporting and working animals.

Physiotherapy can benefit animals of all ages; from young, developing athletes to older pets experiencing stiffness and reduced mobility. Treatments are always tailored to the individual animal and works alongside veterinary care to promote optimal function, comfort, and quality of life.

Common reasons for treatment in dogs include, cruciate ligament injuries and surgery (TPLO/TTA), hip or elbow dysplasia, arthritis, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), patella luxation, neurological conditions, muscle strains and recovery from other surgery.

In horses, physiotherapy is often used for back pain, kissing spines, suspensory injuries, tendon & ligament injuries, sacroiliac pain, muscle asymmetry, osteoarthritis and rehabilitation follow surgery.

What is involved in a treatment session?

A full assessment of your animal will be carried out at each visit, followed by manual therapy, electrotherapy and remedial exercise.

Manual Therapy

Manual therapy is the foundation of physiotherapy treatment and can be formed as a standalone treatment. Many people forget the importance of manual therapy and do not include this in their sessions. I take pride in continuing to use extensive massage techniques throughout all of my treatments, and realise the importance and need for using these. Along with massage, I also use stretching to improve muscle tone and help to prevent injury.

Electrotherapies

Electrotherapies are a great addition to any veterinary physiotherapist's kit bag. They are supportive treatment modalities that assist in healing, reducing pain, and improve tissue function. Although each electrotherapy treatment works in a different way and targets tissues differently, they all aim to provide the same overall outcome to reduce pain, promote healing, improve comfort, enhance recovery and increase function.

Electrotherapies are used alongside hands-on treatments and exercise programmes as part of the individualised physiotherapy plan tailored to each animal's condition and stage of healing.

Remedial Exercise

Remedial exercises are tailored exercises designed to improve the animals strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and overall movement. They form an important part of veterinary physiotherapy and can help to support recovery following injury or surgery, improve performance, manage long-term conditions and reduce the risk of future injury. Exercises are individually adapted to each animal based on their condition, ability, and stage of rehabilitation.

This part is where you, as owners, come in. I will leave you exercises to carry out between visits and will consist of controlled exercise and management advice.
